Deer of the rainforest
White-tailed deer or whitetails, as locals call them, are one of the most common kinds of deer in Mexico
. They are very graceful and strong. They have been habitants of Mexico for centuries. What do you need to know about these graceful creatures when you stumble upon them in the Aktun-Chen Park? Here are some interesting facts for you to read:
· An average white-tailed deer weighs from 70 to 100 kg and it can be up to 1.8 meters long.
· It’s extremely fast
! Imagine, it can move at a speed of 48km/h. The most amazing thing, however, is that its single leap can be 9 meters long!
· Would you like to know why they are called whitetails? There’s a white spot under their tails that can be seen after they raise their tails in order to alarm other deer
when they feel danger. There are also spots of white on their necks, bellies and limbs.
· Stomachs of white-tailed deer can digest such things as cacti
and some plants that are poisonous. Sometimes they can even eat little birds and mice.
· The whitetails are nocturnal animals
. You can rarely see them during the day. They mostly come out early in the morning or in the evening when it starts getting dark.
